During the recent flood disaster in Kano State, a total of 31 individuals have been confirmed deceased across 21 local government areas.
Additionally, the flood has impacted at least 280 people and caused the destruction of 5,280 houses.
Isyaku Kubarachi, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, revealed these details during a briefing with journalists on Wednesday.
Furthermore, the disaster has resulted in the devastation of 2,518 farmlands, encompassing 976 hectares of land.
The heavy rainfall that triggered the flood was notably intense, leading to injuries sustained by 135 individuals as some mud houses collapsed on them.
The affected areas include Wudil, Gwale, Nassarawa, Dala, Tarauni, Dawakin-Tofa, and Dambatta among others.
It is emphasized that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf, had implemented proactive measures before the rainy season to protect both lives and properties.
“These included clearing blockages in drains and evacuation of refuse to ensure smooth water flow during the rainy season.
“Furthermore, SEMA and NEMA have assessed the damage in the affected areas and forwarded the necessary data to the government for necessary assistance.
“The state government is working on providing aid to all 21 local government areas affected by the flood and hopes for a positive outcome soon,” he said.
He revealed that the National Emergency Management Agency has pledged to support the evaluation of the impacted communities.
Nevertheless, he clarified that the affected individuals are presently seeking shelter with their neighbors, as there are no established camps for internally displaced persons in Kano state.
It is worth noting that some of those affected had previously expressed their discontent with the government’s response and made an emotional plea to both the state and federal governments for urgent aid, which has yet to materialize.
