Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf of Kano State has taken a proactive step towards mitigating flood risks and promoting sustainable urban growth by distributing essential materials to 160 Community Development Associations across the state’s eight metropolitan local governments.
This initiative, as explained by the governor’s spokesman Sanusi Tofa, aims to fortify the city’s drainage infrastructure and foster sustainable development.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the vital importance of efficient drainage systems, not only in preventing floods but also in enhancing public health, environmental quality, and overall urban livability.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the valuable contribution of self-help groups in this endeavor, recognizing their pivotal role in tackling local challenges and driving positive change within their communities.
“I’m confident and hopeful that providing these materials will facilitate practical solutions and create lasting impacts.”
“The expected outcomes of this initiative include improved drainage infrastructure in targeted communities; reduced flooding and waterlogging incidents; enhanced public health safety; strengthened community cohesion and increased participation in governance.”
Governor Yusuf urged all stakeholders to join forces in achieving the shared objectives, ensuring the effective utilization of the distributed materials.
He also appealed to development partners and the private sector for financial and technical support, highlighting the government’s dedication to creating a resilient and sustainable city.
The distributed items included a range of tools and equipment, such as wheelbarrows, shovels, rain boots, and first aid boxes, totaling 600 and 150 respectively.
Moreover, the governor cautioned against the reckless disposal of waste in drainage systems and waterways, emphasizing the need to maintain clear water channels to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
