A Foundation Has Gifted A Modern State-Of-The-Art building to UCH

Date:

The Thompson Abayomi Oshin Health and Education Foundation has gifted a modern structure to the University College Hospital, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, in order to honor the significant contributions of their father, Dr. Thompson Oshin, to the advancement of physiotherapy in Nigeria and Africa.

The foundation’s chairman, Dr. Segun Oshin, explained that they undertook this project to pay tribute to their father at the request of the College of Medicine, UI, recognizing him as the first African physiotherapist and the initiator of physiotherapy training in Nigeria.

In addition to this donation, the foundation plans to establish an award in the Faculty of Nursing at the College in memory of their mother, Mrs. Adepeju Oshin, who served as a Senior Matron at UCH.

The inauguration of the edifice took place on Dr. Abayomi Oshin’s 98th birthday, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officiating the event. Represented by Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Health & Social Welfare, the President lauded this initiative as a significant stride toward improving education and healthcare in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the President highlighted the foundation’s role as a beacon of hope and generosity in promoting education and healthcare in Nigeria.

This act of philanthropy, according to him, exemplifies the enduring charitable spirit that characterizes the nation.

He emphasized that the donation of this building signifies more than just a contribution to UI; it stands as a symbol of hope and progress, inspiring others to step up and make a positive impact, especially during challenging times.

“The Oshin family stands as a shining example of how private citizens can contribute to the public good, ensuring that future generations benefit from an enhanced educational system and facilities. Today, we honour not just a new building but also the legacy of Dr. Thompson Abayomi Oshin.

“His life is a testament to dedication, excellence and service. From being the first African physiotherapist in 1954 to his numerous pioneering roles in physiotherapy across the globe,” Tinubu noted.

Oshin’s remarkable career was marked by a series of groundbreaking achievements, including several firsts in the field of physiotherapy.

He was the first African to qualify as a physiotherapist in London, lead a physiotherapy department, and share his expertise on the BBC.

He also made history as the first African exchange physiotherapist to the USA and the first head of physiotherapy at University College Hospital, Ibadan.

To recognize his contributions, Professor Olayinka Omigbodun proposed building an edifice in his honor, which was made possible through the support of his children.

The foundation stone was laid by the late Governor of Ondo State on July 30, 2022, and the building was officially opened two years later, on July 30, 2024.
