Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, is a popular Nigerian artist who was born on May 1, 2000.

He gained popularity after his song “Iron Man” was featured on President Barack Obama’s summer playlist in 2019.

Rema signed a contract with Jonzing World, a branch of Mavin Records, after catching the attention of D’Prince, who was impressed by a viral freestyle video Rema had posted on Instagram in 2018.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Rema was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, into a Christian family. From a young age, he had aspirations of becoming a musician and began singing while attending secondary school.

Rema completed his primary and secondary education at the Ighile Group of Schools in Edo State. He obtained his First School Leaving Certificate and Senior Secondary School Certificate before moving on to higher education.

He successfully applied and was accepted into the renowned University of Lagos, where he pursued a degree in creative arts. After completing his studies, Rema graduated from the university.

CAREER

Rema is a highly successful Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rapper who began his career at a young age in Benin City.

While in secondary school, Rema showcased his talent by performing at various school events, which ultimately led him to gain recognition and popularity.

In 2018, Rema gained attention when he posted a freestyle on Instagram to D’Prince’s song “Gucci Gang”.

This caught the attention of D’Prince himself, who invited Rema to Lagos and offered him a record deal.

Rema signed with “Jonzing World”, a record label owned by D’Prince and a subsidiary of Mavin Records.

Shortly after signing the record deal, Rema released his debut project titled REMA in 2019.

This project quickly rose to the top spot on Apple Music Nigeria, thanks to hit songs like “Dumebi”.

The music video for “Dumebi” was released on May 21, 2019, featuring a cameo appearance from Diana Eneje and directed by Ademola Falomo. It has since garnered over 50 million views on YouTube.

In May 2021, Rema announced that he would be calling his sound “Afrorave”, a subgenre of Afrobeats with influences from Arabian and Indian music.

This unique sound has contributed to Rema’s strong and dedicated fan base, known as Ravers.

The singer’s popularity led to endorsement deals. In September 2021, he was announced as the brand ambassador for Pepsi, a popular soft drink, along with his fellow artist Ayra Starr.

On October 19, 2019, Rema won the Next Rated award and was also nominated for the Viewer’s Choice category at the 13th edition of The Headlines.

On January 12, 2020, he received the SoundCity MVP Awards for being the best new artist.

On June 15, 2020, Rema received another nomination for Best Viewers’ Choice: International Act at the 2020 BET Awards.

He was nominated alongside Burna Boy and Wizkid, the only other Nigerian artists nominated for the 2020 edition of the awards.
