The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps recently took action by confiscating a truck full of prohibited styrofoam packs that were being transported within the state.
The truck was stopped by the LAGESC Surulere division at the Ojuelegba area, as it was headed towards Cameroon in a Mercedes-Benz 814.
Despite the ban on styrofoam in Lagos State, some individuals have been found hoarding these banned items in warehouses.
They then try to sell them at discounted rates to unsuspecting buyers from other regions. The Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Maj. Olaniyi Cole (retd.), expressed disappointment over this discovery.
Previously, the state government, with the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, had enforced a ban on both the usage and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics.
Investigations revealed that a plastic company based in Lagos Island had sold the styrofoam packs for a significant sum to a Cameroonian buyer. The intended route was through Akwa-Ibom State for sales in Cameroon.
The agency, under Cole’s leadership, is dedicated to eliminating environmental violations within the state.
They plan to take strict actions against anyone found breaking the environmental regulations. Styrofoam usage and distribution remain prohibited in Lagos, and the agency has set up a new task force to enhance intelligence activities in this regard.
