The Nigerian Metrological Agency has forecasted an increased risk of flooding and rainstorms in Jigawa this year based on the current data.
The devastating flood has resulted in the loss of 16 lives, displacement of 3,986 individuals, and destruction of over 2,744 hectares of farmland.
Dr. Haruna Mariga, the executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), provided an update on the flood situation, which has affected 10 local government areas in the state.
Despite the fact that the rainy season has not yet peaked, the significant damage already incurred is causing concern, especially with the rising water levels.
Dr. Mairiga highlighted the immediate actions taken by the state government in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to distribute essential relief supplies, including food, to assist the affected individuals.
” As we continue assessing the level of damages in collaboration with NEMA, we are also taking more measures including public enlightenment, construction of embankment to minimise the damages that might have been caused by the flooding in the state.
” 7 Temporary Internally Displaced Person Camps have so far been established while some victims chose to take refugee at the residents of their brothers that was not affected by rainstorm or flooding,” the ES pointed out.
