The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has embarked on implementing advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, enabling real-time monitoring and control of the power grid. Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz shared this update with the House of Representatives Committee on Power during their oversight visit to TCN in Abuja.
Abdulaziz highlighted the benefits of this technological upgrade, including enhanced grid stability, reduced transmission losses, and swift responses to faults and disturbances. He also mentioned the successful implementation of effective frequency control and load balancing, resulting in fewer partial and full system collapses.
The TCN has leveraged Internet of Things (IoT) technology and automatic meter reading infrastructure to increase grid visibility. Additionally, a comprehensive digital transformation has been underway, utilizing both in-house solutions and vendor-procured applications to boost efficiency and effectiveness across TCN operations.
A dedicated web portal has been established to manage generation output and allocation to distribution companies (DisCos). Abdulaziz emphasized the significance of TCN’s achievements in strengthening transmission infrastructure and enhancing grid stability, stressing the need for continued investment, capacity building, and collaborative partnerships to sustain these efforts.
Committee Chairman Victor Nwokolo urged TCN to engage with state governments on right of way (ROW) issues and discuss power infrastructure security with state governors, highlighting the need to address destroyed structures. He also assured that the House would examine the issue of ground rent and ensure timely payments.
