Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi bags another PhD from London university

Date:

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has reached a new academic milestone by obtaining a doctorate in Islamic Law from the University of London in the United Kingdom.

In a heartfelt video, Sanusi was visibly moved upon learning that his thesis had been accepted without any revisions.
The emotional moment was captured during a virtual meeting where the monarch was congratulated for his academic achievement.

Sanusi’s doctoral research, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” delves into how Islamic family law influences societal change.

After being ousted as the Emir of Kano by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020, Muhammadu Sanusi II embarked on his journey towards obtaining a PhD.
Following his removal, Sanusi moved to the UK, where he focused on his academic pursuits.

During the period following his dethronement, Sanusi also received a visiting fellowship at the African Studies Centre of the University of Oxford.
This recent academic accomplishment adds to Sanusi’s list of accolades. In 2019, he was honored with an honorary doctorate in finance by the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

The ex-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor also completed a second bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies at the Africa International University in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1997.

His educational path started in 1981 with a degree in Economics.

Sanusi’s academic achievements and intellectual endeavors position him as one of the most well-educated persons to have held a traditional title in Nigeria.
