In Sokoto State, bandits kidnapped and tortured Alhaji Isa Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir, an emir, who was later killed.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his deep sympathy for the Emir’s family and the Sokoto State government.
BBC Hausa reported the Emir’s death on Wednesday. Atiku, in a statement, called the Emir’s killing tragic and criticized the senseless violence carried out by the bandits.
He stated, “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.
“I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the entire community of Gobir and the government of Sokoto State on the tragic loss of Sarkin Gobir, HRH Alh. Isa Bawa, District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni local Government.
“The heinous act of violence perpetrated by bandits resulting in the untimely demise of such a revered leader is a stark reminder of the pressing need for enhanced security measures in safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.
“The failure of government to show concern or devise effective security strategies has undoubtedly contributed to the escalation of such distressing events in recent times.
“It is important to reiterate that government must provide security that will ensure the protection of lives, such that individuals do not have to live in fear of falling victims to senseless acts of violence.
“May the Almighty Allah accept the soul of Alhaji Isa Bawa and grant his bereaved family and people the fortitude to bear his loss. Amin.”
In July, the Emir and his son were kidnapped by terrorists while traveling from Sokoto to his hometown. A recent video released by the bandits showed the Emir, with blood on his clothes, asking for help. He mentioned that the deadline given by the kidnappers for his release or death had passed the previous Wednesday.
