The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has started a nationwide warning strike that will last for seven days, beginning on Monday, August 26, 2024, at midnight.
The strike is a response to the kidnapping of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Ophthalmology Department at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna.
Dr. Dele Abdullahi, the President of NARD, declared the strike during an urgent meeting of the National Executive Council.
He said, “The strike is total, and there will be no concessions or emergency care during this period.”
Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew are still being held captive after eight months.
NARD members previously protested against Dr. Popoola’s abduction on August 15 in Lagos. The demonstration was arranged by resident doctors from the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta.
