Resident Doctors To Strike On Monday Over Kidnapped Colleague

Date:

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has announced a seven-day warning strike in response to the abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a colleague who has been missing for close to eight months.

NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi revealed that the strike will commence on Monday, August 26, 2024, starting at 12 am local time. This decision was reached during an Emergency National Executive Council meeting.

Dr. Abdulllahi emphasized that the strike is set to last for seven days as a cautionary measure, and it will be a comprehensive strike without exceptions.

During this period, there will be no concessions granted, and emergency care services will not be provided.

He highlighted, “The strike is commencing by midnight today. It’s for seven days, it’s a warning strike, and it’s total.

“During the strike, there will be no concessions, and there will be no emergency care.”

Dr. Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband and nephew.

While her husband was freed in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew are still being held captive. NARD members had already staged protests at various tertiary hospitals nationwide demanding the safe return of Dr. Popoola.
