NCC declares September 14 as final deadline for compliance on NIN-SIM linkage

Date:

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared September 14, 2024, as the last day for all Nigerians to finish connecting their phone SIM cards to their National Identity Numbers (NINs).

This update arrives as the Commission reveals progress in the government’s 2020 policy, with more than 153 million SIM cards already linked to NINs, showing a compliance rate of 96%.

The NCC is urging all mobile users who haven’t linked their SIM cards to their NINs to act quickly before the deadline.

From September 15, 2024, any SIM card without a linked NIN will be turned off. This move aims to improve national security and safeguard Nigeria’s digital systems.

Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, stressed the need for everyone to follow the rules completely, saying, “This linkage is essential for the security of digital transactions and the reduction of fraud and cybercrime. We call on all Nigerians who have not yet completed the process to do so without delay.”

The NCC has instructed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the verification and linking of SIM cards to NINs by the deadline. They are collaborating with security agencies to stop the sale of pre-registered SIM cards.

If people face problems during the linking process, they should contact their service providers or use authorized self-service platforms to update their information before September 14.

The NCC also urged the public to report any unlawful sale of pre-registered SIM cards by calling their toll-free number (622) or reaching out through social media.
