NLC President not above the law – Doyin Okupe

Date:

Doyin Okupe, a former Director-General of a campaign organization, has said that the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, must abide by the law even with the terrorism charges brought against him by the police.

Okupe criticized the NLC’s threat to go on a nationwide strike in response to Ajaero being summoned by the police, calling it unnecessary and possibly creating a dangerous example.

He emphasized the need to follow the rules and warned against suggesting that specific people or groups are immune to legal investigations.

While supporting the police’s ability to call in prominent figures, Okupe also suggested that the police should consider how their actions appear to the public.

He proposed that, in certain situations, the police could approach these individuals at their homes or workplaces to prevent seeming overly harsh.

Okupe advised on his X handle saying, “Also, the police may in some circumstances, adopt the approach to visit some high network people or people not directly involved in criminality, in their residences or places of work. It does not demean the Police in anyway.

“The Nigerian Police must avoid situations whereby in the discharge of their lawful duties, they give the impression of an oppressive force instead of a friendly and a professional one.”
