Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria, has expressed concern about the increasing tribal and religious divides among Nigerians, especially those living abroad.
His comments follow a recent incident involving a Nigerian woman in Canada who made offensive remarks about her fellow Nigerians.
Obi mentioned that he faced a strong wave of responses after criticizing the woman’s statements.
He mentioned that some people tried to justify her actions, saying they were in response to earlier hateful comments directed at Nigerians of Igbo origin.
Obi quickly criticized those earlier remarks too, saying that such behavior that divides people based on tribal or religious lines should not be tolerated.
He repeated his strong stance against any form of tribal or religious division, stating, “Tribal tension and religious division must not be allowed to grow among us.”
He emphasized the importance of unity and focusing together on solving the big problems the country faces like insecurity, high costs of living, and leadership issues.
As a former governor of Anambra State, he called on all Nigerians, both in the country and abroad, to reject divisive talk and work towards creating a united and peaceful nation.
He stated, “With faith in our nation, may we embrace unity and peace, so that we can achieve true progress, growth, and development in our nation.”
Peter Obi ended his statement by calling for a “New Nigeria” built on togetherness and harmony, declaring, “It can possible.”
