Jorja Smith, who was born on June 11, 1997 in Walsall, West Midlands, comes from a family with a strong musical background, as her father used to be a musician.

She started her musical journey by taking piano lessons at the age of 8 and later earned a music scholarship at Aldridge School.

When she was 15 years old, her singing abilities were discovered on YouTube, and she began collaborating with artists such as Maverick Sabre and Ed Thomas in London.

By the time she turned 18, Smith had moved to London and worked as a barista to support herself while pursuing her musical aspirations.

CAREER

Maverick Sabre showed his support for Smith in late 2015. In January 2016, she released her debut single “Blue Lights” on SoundCloud, which quickly gained 400,000 plays.

Drake praised her second single, “Where Did I Go?”, in Entertainment Weekly. This exposure caught the attention of Guy Moot from Sony/ATV, who signed her to a publishing deal in late 2016.

In November of the same year, she released her debut EP “Project 11.” Jorja Smith was also included in BBC Music’s Sound of 2017 longlist, where she placed fourth.

In early 2017, Jorja Smith joined Drake’s Boy Meets World Tour and was featured on his mixtape More Life. She released “Beautiful Little Fools” on International Women’s Day and collaborated with Kali Uchis on the song “Tyrant.” She continued to release more singles, including “Teenage Fantasy” and “On My Mind” with Preditah.

In September, Jorja Smith began a romantic relationship with Joel Compass. During that time, she had the incredible opportunity to be the opening act for Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic World Tour.

Adding to her achievements, she was also announced as the recipient of the prestigious Brit Critics’ Choice Award, making her the first independent artist to ever be nominated and win this honor.

Moving into early 2018, Jorja Smith collaborated with Stormzy on the captivating single “Let Me Down” and contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther soundtrack with the powerful track “I Am.”

She showcased her talent at the BRIT Awards and made her debut on American television with a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In June of that year, she released her highly anticipated debut album Lost & Found, which received widespread critical acclaim. This success led her to embark on a European tour.

Continuing her musical journey, Jorja Smith started her North American tour in November, with Ravyn Lenae as her supporting act.

Looking ahead to 2019, she announced a co-headlining tour with Kali Uchis and delighted her fans with the release of the single “Be Honest,” featuring Burna Boy, in August.

Following this, “Go Go Go” was released on 4 August 2023, and an exclusive cover of East-17’s “Stay Another Day” was released on Amazon Music Originals on 9 November 2023.
