Don’t Sell Dead Animals To Residents, Enugu Govt Warns Butchers

Date:

The Enugu State Government has given a stern warning to farmers and butchers in the region, advising them against the sale of deceased animals to the public for consumption.

This cautionary measure has been put in place to prevent the potential spread of infectious diseases which could result from such practices.

This warning was articulated in a joint statement issued by Professor Ikechukwu Obi, the Commissioner for Health, and Patrick Ubru, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, both based in the state capital of Enugu.

The Commissioners expressed their apprehension after receiving reports from concerned citizens regarding the sale of animals that had succumbed to diseases like flu and other zoonotic illnesses within the local meat market.

To address this alarming issue, the state government has initiated actions, activating various departments such as public health, veterinary, and local government disease surveillance systems.

These departments have been tasked with conducting thorough investigations into the alleged transgressions. The government officials have affirmed that consuming meat from deceased animals poses significant health risks to the public, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.

The Commissioners have underlined the gravity of this illicit activity, stating that those found guilty will face consequences for their actions.

Health officers have been deployed to livestock farms and abattoirs for further scrutiny, ensuring that such practices are addressed promptly and that offenders are held accountable for endangering public health.

“The government reiterates that the sale of animals that died of unknown causes outside the normal methods of preparation is a serious crime.

“There are grave health risks associated with consuming such meat as it can lead to zoonotic diseases which are easily transmitted from animals to humans,” they said.

The commissioners warned the public to be vigilant and report suspicious activities, as selling uninspected and dead animals can lead to epidemics with severe health consequences.

To report concerns, the public can call 08037178703, 08066865511, 08037431577, or 08033375344.

This warning follows a July incident where the Veterinary Department raided Afo Awkunanaw Gariki Market, finding individuals selling unexamined and deceased animals as meat, highlighting the need for continued vigilance.
