Following the destructive flood in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, President Bola Tinubu has instructed his deputy, Kashim Shettima, to promptly visit the affected area.
Shettima disclosed this information on Tuesday in Abuja during the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference (CIBN) themed “Accelerated Economic Growth and Development: the state of play and the way forward.”
Shettima stated, “After this meeting with the consent of the President, I will rush to Maiduguri. The whole city has been overtaken by flood.
“It is not peculiar to one part of the country. We are facing these challenges right from Bayelsa to Sokoto.
“Be rest assured that the President has the nation at heart and will do whatever it takes to salvage the state of affairs.”
The vice president, a former governor of the northeastern state, expressed President Tinubu’s government’s condolences to all individuals affected by flood calamities nationwide.
He stated, “I want to use this forum to commiserate with the people of our great nation over the flood disasters we are recording all across the length and breath of this nation.”
Reports indicate that due to the failure of water channels at the Alau Dam, numerous Maiduguri residents have been displaced by flooding.
Residential neighborhoods, such as sections of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market, and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, have been inundated. Roads and bridges are underwater, leading to the isolation of several regions.
The flood has significantly impacted locations like GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture, and School of Health Technology, among others.
