INEC officially closed the campaigns for the 2024 Edo governorship election on Thursday.
The announcement was made through a statement by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner & Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.
In adherence to the Electoral Act 2022 and the Timetable for the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, all political parties were reminded that campaign activities were to cease by midnight on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
As of midnight, any political party engaging in rallies, processions, or media campaigns in Edo State would be in violation of the law.
Olumekun highlighted that the Electoral Act 2022, specifically Section 96, outlines the prohibitions and corresponding sanctions for such activities post the campaign deadline.
He stated, “Similarly, on Election Day, Saturday 21st September 2024, parties, candidates and their supporters should not appear at the polling units in their campaign attires or carry any campaign materials with them.
“We urge the parties, candidates and their supporters to take note of the provisions of the law for compliance.”
