Court dismisses suit seeking to replace pro-Wike lawmakers

Date:

A court in Rivers State has rejected a lawsuit seeking to replace 27 lawmakers in the state House of Assembly who are aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike.

The lawsuit aimed to dispute the legitimacy of these legislators, alleging that their loyalty to Wike compromised their duties.

In a statement following the verdict, a court representative mentioned,  “The evidence presented did not sufficiently warrant the removal of the lawmakers. They have the right to serve their constituents without undue interference.”

The court’s ruling has sparked varied reactions, with Wike’s supporters interpreting it as a triumph for democratic representation. However, opponents have expressed dismay, arguing that the lawmakers’ allegiance to Wike undermines the assembly’s autonomy.

One critic stated, “This ruling is a setback for accountability in governance. The people of Rivers State deserve representatives who prioritise their interests over partisan loyalty.”

This decision is anticipated to have implications on the political scene in Rivers, given Wike’s significant influence in the region.

Observers are now monitoring closely to assess how this judgment will influence future political affiliations and legislative activities within the assembly.
