Atiku supports move to unseat Umar Damagum as party’s chairman

Date:

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has endorsed the campaign to remove Umar Damagum, the interim National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The effort to oust Damagum has caused a split among the 13 PDP governors, with seven, under the leadership of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, supporting the removal, while four, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, are in favor of retaining Damagum.

The pro-Damagum group is in alliance with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, who is at odds with the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Atiku and Wike’s relationship deteriorated during the buildup to the 2023 general elections, when Wike led a group of governors opposing Atiku’s presidential candidacy.

Reports suggest that Atiku has reached out to members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) and other prominent party figures to rally behind the push for the ousting of Damagum.

A source revealed, “I can confirm that Atiku has spoken with some of us. He assured us that we are not alone and that he supports our pursuit of justice, fairness, and equity.

“He encouraged us to stay motivated and continue advocating for the PDP Constitution to be followed in the NWC’s daily decisions. He understands our reasons for wanting Damagum removed and did not disagree.

“We have no personal issues with Damagum; our goal is to protect the party so that Nigerians have an alternative in future elections.

“Damagum should honour the party’s constitution and traditions, step back to his original role as Deputy National Chairman (North), and allow the North Central to nominate a replacement promptly.”

The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) has faced significant scrutiny over Damagum’s decisions, especially following his transfer of authority over the Rivers State PDP structure to Wike, disregarding the sitting governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

This action led to internal discord within the party, as the PDP Governors’ Forum emphasizes that state governors should serve as the party leaders within their states.

Atiku’s position is interpreted as a drive for changes within the party, with sources indicating that his objective is to uphold democratic values and adhere to the party’s constitution.

“Atiku is collaborating with NWC members and other dedicated party leaders to ensure that the right actions are taken to uphold the party’s constitution,” another source stated.
