WAPCP To Build N3.8BN Pharmacists’ Secretariat

Date:

The West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) has commenced construction of a N3.8 billion state-of-the-art secretariat and conference centre in Lagos’ Yaba area.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, President Murtada Sesay outlined the college’s objectives: promoting pharmacy education, practice harmonization, research, and advancing specialized disciplines.

The facility will feature an e-library, regional drug information centre, offices, conference halls, and meeting rooms to enhance West African healthcare delivery. Completion is expected within 24 months, contingent on funding.

Sesay commended the College Property Committee, led by Sir Anthony Akhimien, and appealed for financial support, promising recognition for major donors. This project underscores WAPCP’s commitment to excellence in postgraduate pharmacy education.

He emphasized, “The major objectives of our College are to promote harmonisation of Pharmacy education and practice in the region, promote research in Pharmacy, and to advance Pharmacy practice in specialised disciplines.

“We are at the forefront of promoting harmonization of pharmaceutical legislation and development of National Drug policies in the region.

“We promote the integration of traditional Health Systems of Countries in the region and as well co-operate with other Health professionals, Scientists and organisations in activities that will ensure the maintenance of high standards of Pharmacy practice and healthcare delivery.

“Let me reassure our guests and special invitees that the College under my leadership will be willing to consider dedicating any part of the building to our major donors.”

In his remarks, the property committee chairman, Anthony Akhimien stated the project is to provide an avenue where pharmacists can not only be trained but also be comfortable to do research.

He emphasized the need for private organisations and health associations to support the government for a better health outcome.

He noted, “The government cannot do everything in moving the healthcare industry forward. What we are doing is to add value to what the government is doing.

“We want Nigerians to come out and assist us in making this a reality.”
