Lagos Authorities Discover Hidden Warehouse Storing Illegal Styrofoam Packs

Date:

The Lagos state authorities, with the help of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, have recently found a warehouse in Ikeja that was illegally storing banned styrofoam packs.

This discovery was made based on information provided by a whistleblower, leading the officials to locate the warehouse at the address No. 6 Ogusefunmi Street, off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe.

A statement posted on Tuesday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the discovery.

The Commissioner mentioned that this finding was a result of acting on a tip from a whistleblower, and the warehouse was found at No. 6 Ogusefunmi Street, off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, in Ikeja.

“The building is being used for storing the banned styrofoam packs. The operatives of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps have confiscated the packs.”

Lagos State authorities carried out a confiscation of banned Styrofoam packs on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. This enforcement action follows the state government’s January 2024 announcement prohibiting the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.

According to Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, the ban was implemented due to the significant environmental threat posed by non-biodegradable Styrofoam, commonly used in disposable plates at eateries.

The ministry has since been cracking down on illegal storage and sales of these banned items to mitigate pollution.
