Oyo State Clears 153km Drains, Culverts To Prevent Flooding

Date:

The Oyo State Government has taken proactive measures to prevent flood disasters during the rainy season by clearing over 153 kilometers of blocked drainages and culverts along major roads in Ibadan, the state capital.

This effort, announced by Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, aims to mitigate the risks associated with flooding.

According to Mogbonjubola, the clearing project is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during the rainy season.

Mogbonjubola stated, “The government deems it necessary to clear blocked drains and culverts of debris such as nylon, bottles, sand, wood, and tyres to ensure free flow of water during rainfall, thereby reducing the risk of flooding.”

Commissioner Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola emphasized the importance of proactive measures in preventing flooding in Oyo State.

Through Oladipo Adebowale, Director of the Ministry’s Engineering Department, Mogbonjubola highlighted that prioritizing drainage desilting is crucial.

During an on-site assessment with officials from the Ministry, State Project Performance Monitoring Agency, and Office of the Auditor-General, he commended the government’s foresight.

Mogbonjubola also cautioned residents against illegally dumping refuse in unauthorized areas, underscoring its role in exacerbating flooding. This proactive approach aligns with Oyo State’s efforts to mitigate flood risks, as seen in their recent dredging of eight flood-prone rivers and streams across the state.

“Blocking drains and culverts not only leads to flooding but also damages the asphalt layers of our roads. Anyone found dumping refuse indiscriminately will face the full wrath of the State Environmental Law.”

The Oyo State Government successfully cleared numerous critical drainage channels, including those connecting Total Garden to Beere, Iyaganku to Odo-Ona and Apata, as well as key areas like Jericho, Sango-Eleyele, Ijokodo, and Olunde, among others.
