FG reaffirms commitment to free press

Date:

The Federal Government restated its commitment to a free and responsible press. During the public presentation of the book titled “Writing for Media and Monetizing it,” authored by Mr. Azu Ishiekwene, the Vice Chairman and Editor in Chief of Leadership Newspapers, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, made a commitment.

The event attracted a diverse audience comprising media professionals, journalists, and enthusiasts such as notable attendees which included Pa Sam Amuka-Pemu, the founder of Vanguard Newspaper; Zainab Nda-Isaiah, Chairman of Leadership Newspaper; Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation; representatives from the governors of Plateau and Kogi states; and Mrs. Dupe Olusola, Managing Director/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc.

Expanding on his statement, the minister emphasized that the government recognized the importance of a society’s progress being dependent on the freedom of its media organizations to report the truth without fear of reprisal. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of the media’s role in holding those in power accountable.

The minister described the book as an important milestone and encouraged media practitioners to prioritize ethical practices and acknowledge the responsibilities that come with press freedom.

“We understand that a society can only flourish when its media organs are free to report the truth without fear of retribution and to equally hold those in authority accountable.

“The President Tinubu administration is therefore, dedicated to creating an environment where journalists can work freely, without intimidation, and with the assurance that their rights will be acknowledged and protected.

“However, freedom comes with responsibility. As we champion the cause of a free press, it is incumbent on the media to exercise this freedom with a sense of duty, ethics and patriotism. It is crucial that the information disseminated to the public is accurate, balanced, and devoid of sensationalism.”

Dapo Olorunyomi, the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, a well-known investigative journalist and a strong supporter of press freedom, commended the book as a valuable tool for journalists.

He stressed the importance of innovation and adaptability in the fast-evolving media industry.

Dr. Reuben Abati, in his review, praised the book for its wide-ranging coverage of topics such as personal development, writing, law, social media management, and journalism in the age of artificial intelligence.

The author, Azu Ishiekwene, highlighted the importance of collaboration and value creation, emphasizing the need for journalists and media professionals to monetize their content.

He stated, “When you create different streams of revenue, it’s important to quickly monetize and produce content that others find useful and valuable. People are willing to pay for something when they perceive its value.”
