Dr. Julius Oni, a Nigerian associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, has made the bold decision to leave behind his 25-year life in the United States and return to his homeland.
In a viral video, Oni shared his inspiring story, declaring,
“I reverse Japa from the U.S. to Nigeria 6 weeks ago,” referencing the popular Nigerian term ‘Japa,’ which means to flee or emigrate in search of better opportunities.
“I relocated from the U.S. to Nigeria. I took a leave of absence from my job at Johns Hopkins, sold my house, sold my cars, packed my bags alongside my lovely wife and beautiful children, and moved after 25 years of living in the USA,” he noted.
Leaving his role at Johns Hopkins University on leave, Oni sold his possessions and relocated with his family. His mission? To revolutionize Nigeria’s healthcare landscape and provide top-notch orthopaedic care to Nigerians.
Acknowledging potential skepticism, Oni affirmed his conviction, “I’m not delusional or crazy; I’m driven by a deep belief that Nigerians deserve world-class healthcare.”
As CEO of XCITE Capital, Oni has launched DOC Medical Nigeria, aiming to make high-quality musculoskeletal care accessible locally.
“My goal is to ensure Nigerians can receive excellent orthopaedic surgery without traveling abroad,” he explained.
Oni’s dedication is already yielding results, and his story serves as a testament to the power of conviction and determination.
“I am humbled to say that people are coming from near and far, from as near as Ghana and as far as the UK,” he said, adding that many patients who would have otherwise travelled abroad for surgery now have access to top-tier orthopaedic care within Nigeria.
On his Instagram account, Dr. Julius Oni shared accomplishments since launching DOC Medical Nigeria, including completing initial surgeries and hosting free clinics with partner organizations.
Additionally, he mentioned consulting with patients internationally.
