“Reconsider recent increase in petrol prices“ – Christian elders warns

Date:

The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) issues caution to President Tinubu’s administration, pleading with the Federal Government to reconsider the petrol price hike.

The group expressed their concern over the effects of the fuel price hike on millions of Nigerians, issuing warning that failure to reverse the situation could result to economic and social consequences.

Dr. Samuel Gani, the NCEF Chairman, in his statement said that the Christian elders linked the current hardship and poverty to the significant surge in fuel prices, which brought about inflation in vital commodities such as transportation and food.

The statement read, “We urge President Tinubu to reconsider the recent increase in petrol prices, which has led to a significant rise in the cost of food and other essential commodities.

“The government must act quickly to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, especially the poorest and most vulnerable among us.”

The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) noted that Nigeria’s poverty level has risen to 38.9% in 2023, partly due to petrol prices hike, which has put more pressure on people’s incomes.

The forum also mentioned that the protests happening nationwide are a clear expression of how frustrated Nigerians are with the increasing expenses of daily life, including high fuel costs.

Dr Gani cautioned, “The protests we are witnessing are driven by the severe hardship caused by the increase in fuel prices. Many Nigerians can no longer afford basic necessities, and the government must recognize this urgency.”

Also, NCEF expresses concern over the rising insecurity in rural areas, most importantly for farmers whose crucial role is to ensure Nigeria’s food security.

According to the elders, the efforts of the government to look into insecurity have been insufficient, and more effective measures are required.

The forum added, “Farmers in rural areas, who are vital to the nation’s food supply, are facing significant security threats. We call for improved protection of these farmers to ensure Nigeria’s food security is not further jeopardized.”
