The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, reiterated his administration’s dedication to eradicating polio and other childhood diseases by collaborating with partners to vaccinate 3.6 million children in the state.
He made this commitment during the launch of the 2024 polio eradication campaign in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area. Yusuf emphasized the importance of working closely with local communities to ensure that every child in the state receives vaccination.
Additionally, he stated that the government will remain vigilant in providing routine immunizations to protect children.
“Our collective goal and target is to immunise not less than 3.6 million children against poliomyelitis. We vaccinators will go from house to house to ensure that all under-five children are immunised against polio. In the process, we will also sensitise parents to the need to make their children available for immunisation so as not to be liabilities to them but assets,” Yusuf said.
He called parents to make their wards available for immunisation, as well as maintain good hygiene.
“The state government is committed to programmes and policies that would improve their well-being,” the governor stressed.
Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, Deputy Governor and chairman of the state task force on polio eradication, expressed gratitude to partners for their dedication to eliminating polio in Kano and beyond. He affirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with donor agencies in the fight against polio.
Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, the state Commissioner for Health, explained that Dawakin Kudu was selected as the launching point due to its inadequate routine immunization coverage.
Dr. Mayana Sanusi, standing in for Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, the World Health Organisation country representative, reported that WHO had deployed numerous personnel to provide technical assistance and ensure all children receive vaccinations.
