When purchasing cosmetics or skincare products, be sure to inspect the ingredients of each item as some of the chemicals used can be harmful to the skin over time.
Take note of the following chemicals because they have the potential to harm your skin:
1. Phthalates
Phthalates are hazardous chemicals used as lubricants in cosmetics or to increase a product’s volume. They may be present in moisturizers, perfumes, nail polish, detergents, hair sprays, and shampoos. This chemical is associated with issues related to birth and hormones (in both males and females), including breast cancer.
2. Parabens
Parabens are chemicals functioning as preservatives in skincare products. They can be located in soaps, makeup, lotions, shampoos, and similar products. They impact the brain and female reproductive organs. When parabens penetrate the skin, they enhance the production of female sex hormones, potentially leading to breast cancer.
3. Sulfates or Sulphate
Sulfates result from the combination of sulphuric acid with another chemical. While there are different types, sodium lauryl sulfate is the most commonly used. This substance can irritate the skin, deplete essential moisture, and even have carcinogenic effects. Sulfates are commonly found in products like cleansers and toothpaste.
4. Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol is utilized as an antibacterial agent in cosmetics but is a highly toxic chemical that can harm the skin upon absorption, particularly in nursing mothers. It has the potential to impact the central nervous system and brain.
5. Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is utilized as a preservative in skincare products.
This colorless gas primarily prevents bacterial growth. Formaldehyde can be present in lotions, makeup, nail polish, shampoos, and deodorants, causing burning sensations, watery eyes, and skin irritation.
Furthermore, inhalation of formaldehyde can lead to symptoms like suffocation and dizziness.
