The Action People’s Party (APP) is going through a leadership problem because a court in Port Harcourt has allowed the serving of the Rivers State chairman, Sunny Wokekoro, and 23 other party candidates for the upcoming local elections using different methods.
This issue stems from Hart Badom, Destiny Omereji, and four others trying to make Badom the rightful State Chairman of the APP again and pushing for Wokekoro to be removed.
The party is caught up in a leadership crisis with Badom and his supporters arguing against Wokekoro’s position as the chairman.
The problem got worse when Wokekoro handed in the names of the 23 candidates for the local elections on October 5 to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The people taking legal action want a statement saying Wokekoro’s actions are not valid, mentioning issues with how he became chairman. They are also questioning whether the 23 candidates are truly members of the APP in the state.
The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Excel Omeghara, asked to serve the defendants differently through a legal motion, which the judge, Justice Emmanuel Obele, allowed.
Omeghara stated, “We are seeking justice, and we believe the court will uphold the rule of law.”
The APP has seen a notable rise in popularity in Rivers State recently, especially after Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s supporters chose it as their party for the upcoming October 5 local government elections.
A considerable number of the APP’s candidates for chairmanship were previously affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but switched sides due to internal conflicts within the PDP.
