Ogbomoso resident of Oyo State, have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to address the flooding crisis that has severely impacted their community.
Following heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, several areas within the city were inundated. Numerous homes were damaged, and millions of naira worth of property, including electronics, were lost due to the severe flooding.
The overflow of the Ora River, which runs through the eastern section of Ogbomoso, was identified as the cause of the flooding.
Residents of the affected neighborhoods, especially in Owode, have voiced their frustration and helplessness after being forced to evacuate their homes, leading many to seek refuge with friends and family.
Dorcas Odekola, one of the affected residents, shared her experience with our correspondent on Saturday, expressing her sorrow over the situation.
“My house was completely submerged. We lost a lot to the flood, our valuables, electronics, everything. It was a horrible experience, and we had no choice but to stay with one of my sons. We are pleading with Governor Seyi Makinde and our leaders to come to our aid because we have nowhere else to turn,” she explained.
Similarly, Mrs. Olawuyi Abosede voiced her disbelief at the extent of the flooding.
She noted that in her 20 years of residing in the area, she had never witnessed such severe inundation.
“The government needs to assist us by fixing the submerged houses and clearing the blocked waterways, which caused the flooding. Something should be done to avoid reoccurrence please,” she urged.
In response, Dotun Oyelade, the state Commissioner for Information, assured the community that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had already begun working to resolve the crisis.
NAIJATRAFFIC learnt that, he stated, “They only became aware this morning (Saturday). Had they been informed earlier, SEMA would have responded to the situation in Ogbomoso last night. Actions are now being taken to manage the crisis.”
He also mentioned that the chairpersons of Ogbomoso South and Ogbomoso North local government areas were prepared and waiting for SEMA personnel to arrive to assist with the damage caused by the floods.
