Israel Abosi, the recently elected Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government, forcefully entered the council office in Isiokpo with armed mens, gaining control shortly after the building was set on fire by arsonists.
This seizure occurred on Tuesday morning, with Abosi arriving alongside his deputy, newly elected council members, and a group of supporters, including vigilantes wielding guns and shooting into the air.
The situation was intense, with supporters singing songs of unity and challenging their political rivals to face them at the council office.
After the attacks on Ikwerre and Emohua Local Government Council offices on Monday, which were triggered by the removal of police officers guarding the 23 council secretariats by Police Chief Kayode Egbetokun.
In reaction to the unrest, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Nigerian Police Force to ensure security is maintained at all 23 local government secretariats.
