The Labour Party (LP) in Edo State and its candidate, Olumide Akpata, have received a significant boost in their chances of winning the election.
The United Kingdom Branch of the party, along with some former governorship aspirants, have officially endorsed Akpata and urged the people of Edo state to vote for him and the LP. They believe that this is the most certain path towards prosperity for the state.
In order to secure victory, the party members stated their intention to have representatives present in all 4,519 polling units within the state. They emphasized that this approach differs from the 2023 presidential election, during which they claimed not to have had agents in a significant number of polling units across Nigeria.
They believe that this lack of representation resulted in the loss for both the party and Peter Obi. During a virtual press conference, Prince Egbe Omorodion, the Chairman of the LP in Diaspora and the UK, highlighted that Akpata would be the “Obi” in Edo State. Omorodion stated that Akpata has a wide-ranging following and would emulate the achievements of Obi during his governorship in Anambra State.
Additionally, he mentioned the positive actions being taken by Governor Alex Oti, the sole LP governor in Nigeria, in Abia State, and implied that Akpata would replicate similar successes in Edo State.
He also stated that voting for the APC or PDP would mean bringing back Oshiomhole and Obaseki, who aim to maintain their dominance in Edo State’s politics and governance.
He said, “Tinubu’s threat of returning Edo to the APC in a trending video should be allowed and Edo people should also allow Obaseki to enthrone his preferred candidate because he and his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole want to remain as bosses. The same thing we supported Obaseki to fight against is what he wants to bring back.
“AKpata wants to make democracy and good governance obtainable in Edo State that is why he is comtesting. Akpata wanted to contest as an independent candidate but because our constitution does not allow it for now, he chose the LP with the mama, papa, pikin symbol because that represents what he stands for.
This time around, we will be represented in all the polling units in the state by our agents. The mistake of the presidential election where we did not have agents in all the wards across the country will not repeat itself” he further noted.
Regarding the party crisis in the state, Omorodion clarified that there is only one executive committee (exco) of the LP in the state. He explained that at the time when the national chairman, Abure, was inaugurating the caretaker committee, his tenure had already expired.
