The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified its ongoing membership drive, emphasizing that it is focused solely on attracting new members and not aimed at removing existing ones. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) issued a statement to this effect, which was signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.
The PDP acknowledged receiving reports of certain states where existing members were being requested to revalidate their membership, leading to speculations of a political witch-hunt.
However, the party has assured that the membership drive is solely intended to offer eligible Nigerians the chance to join the party.
The PDP clarified that the exercise is not aimed at targeting or purging existing members but rather creating an avenue for new individuals to become part of the party.
The statement states, “The NWC in clear terms clarifies that the ongoing membership drive and registration of new members is only targeted at providing opportunity and access to eligible Nigerians who are enthusiastic and surging in their millions to register as members of our Party across the country.
“The NWC further clarifies that the membership status, rights and privileges of already existing members remain valid and in no way whatsoever affected by the membership drive.
“Consequently, no existing member is expected or required to have his or her membership revalidated as such individuals remain bona-fide members of the Party and not subject to any form of revalidation.
“All members and officers of our Party especially at all Electoral Wards across the country should take note of the above and be guided accordingly.
“The NWC again acknowledges the continuing influx of millions of Nigerians into our Party in the ongoing PDP membership drive exercise across the country.
“The PDP urges all members to continue to work together in the drive to further strengthen our Party for the task ahead.”
This clarification puts an end to rumors suggesting a political expulsion aimed at former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike and his allies, allegedly orchestrated by Governor Sim Fubara’s loyalists. The rumored conflict between Wike and Fubara revolves around the control of political structures in the state.
