9mobile Appoints Obafemi Banigbe as New CEO

Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), operating as 9mobile, has announced the appointment of Obafemi Banigbe, a former director at Airtel, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Banigbe will take over from Juergen Peschel, the outgoing CEO, who will remain with the company as a consultant to support ongoing business transformation efforts.

EMTS stated that this transition aligns with its commitment to business continuity, ensuring a smooth start to comprehensive transformation. Banigbe expressed his excitement about the appointment, emphasizing his aim to leverage his experience to guide 9mobile through its next phase of growth.

“The Nigerian telecoms industry is highly competitive but offers numerous opportunities for stakeholders,” Banigbe remarked. “I am thrilled to join the 9mobile family and am eager to use my experience to lead the company into its next exciting chapter. My goal is to build on the company’s existing foundation to create value and drive transformation in the Nigerian telecoms sector.”

EMTS highlighted Banigbe’s expected close collaboration with the board and stakeholders to develop long-term business plans that address the evolving needs of the Nigerian telecommunications market. The company expressed confidence in Banigbe’s vision, passion, and extensive experience, which will enhance customer experience and network quality.

Banigbe brings extensive C-suite experience and a deep understanding of the African business landscape, essential for translating business objectives into successful strategies.

Banigbe’s Career and Qualifications

Banigbe holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna. He has furthered his expertise through the Ericsson management development program, the advanced management program at the London Business School, and an MBA from Manchester Business School in the UK.

His career in the telecoms industry began at Celtel (now Airtel Nigeria) as the director of operations. He also held various significant roles at Ericsson within the Sub-Saharan Africa market unit, culminating as network support group manager for access and transport networks.

Previously, Banigbe was the Chief Operations Officer (COO) at Millicom Ghana, where he developed operational strategies for the business. His tenure at the Millicom Group included roles such as interim CEO and Chief Technical Officer for Millicom Ghana and Millicom International Cellular Tanzania.

Banigbe’s international experience spans several countries, including the United States and various African nations. He co-founded Silver Rock Technology Services, an advisory firm specializing in telecom, media, and technology sectors in Ghana, and served as a non-executive director at Amplitude Telecoms, a tower infrastructure provider in Nigeria.

As an advisory board member for Telecel Group, Banigbe played a crucial role in the acquisition of Vodafone Ghana. He has also contributed insights to Nsano Group and provided guidance to the Kirusa Group in the US on product development and market entry strategies.

Before his appointment by 9mobile, Banigbe was a senior partner of strategy and technology at Africa Context Advisory Partners.
