Edo Family Planning Services Face Shortages, Despite N27m Funding

Date:

In Edo state, a shortage of essential family planning commodities in primary healthcare facilities has created a significant obstacle for individuals seeking these services.

Those affected have voiced their concerns, explaining that the scarcity has limited their access to vital care.

Naijatraffic learnt that, During personal interviews conducted at various facilities in Egor and Oredo Local Government Areas, numerous individuals revealed that they often have to pay for services that are supposed to be free, further exacerbating the challenge.

“I have been coming to the PHC for the past three months, but they always tell me that they don’t have the commodities.

“It’s frustrating because I need the services to plan my family,” mentioned Mrs Felicia Okoro, a family planning acceptor from Benin City.

Also, another, Mrs Grace Osaige, said she had to opt for another method since the preferred commodity was not available.

“I was turned back from Edaiken PHC last week because they didn’t have the commodities. We have to opt for another method to save the situation,” she pointed out.

Osagie appealed to the state government to investigate the shortage of family planning commodities, emphasizing that these services are intended to be free.

In response, the Edo Government announced that it had allocated over N27 million for the procurement of family planning commodities in 2024.

According to Dr. Stephenson Ojeifo, Director of Public Health at the Edo State Ministry of Health, family planning initiatives have been successfully implemented in the state, thanks to collaborations with organizations like The Challenge Initiative and Marie Stopes.

While acknowledging that the increased demand for family planning services has resulted in a shortage of commodities, Dr. Ojeifo assured that the state is taking steps to address the issue.

“The state has not rested on its oars. We always make available the commodities and our partners also support us in one way or another.

“The national government also supports us with trickles of supplies from time to time.

“We did a memo for approval for the procurement of family planning commodities, and it has been approved by His Excellency.

“We are sure that before the end of this month or next, funds will be released to procure those commodities,” Ojeifo explained.

Dr. Ojeifo expressed confidence that the procurement of family planning commodities would resolve the current shortage and ensure seamless continuation of services.

He praised Governor Godwin Obaseki for prioritizing healthcare in his administration and approving funds for family planning commodities, demonstrating his commitment to the well-being of the citizens.
