Peter Obi commends Ola Olukoyede for recovering stolen assets

Date:

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in recovering stolen assets and combating corruption in Nigeria. Obi conveyed his commendation through a statement shared on social media on Monday.

The former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, praised Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for alerting the public about the widespread theft of the nation’s money and assets by public officials.

Obi described Olukoyede’s efforts as commendable. He restated his longstanding position on giving top priority to addressing high-level corruption, which he believes has severely damaged the economy and left citizens in poverty.

He stated, “The recent alarm that was raised by the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede on the massive looting of our treasury and assets by public officials in Nigeria deserves commendation.

“I have consistently advocated for prioritizing the tackling of grand corruption, which has ravaged our economy and impoverished our citizens. I urge anti-graft agencies to focus on investigating grand theft and corruption in government and public asset management, such as oil theft, budget padding, contract inflation, embezzlement, and misappropriation of public funds. It’s also crucial to hold those who engage in cronyism and nepotism. Lesser agencies can handle minor cases of petty theft and money spraying at parties.”

Obi encouraged anti-corruption agencies to prioritize their investigations into major theft and corruption in government and the handling of public assets. This includes addressing issues like oil theft, padding of budgets, inflated contracts, embezzlement, and the misuse of public funds.

He also called for holding accountable those involved in favoritism and nepotism.
