Despite a decline in importation, the Apapa Area 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) reported collecting over N1 trillion in the first half of 2024.
Addressing journalists in Lagos, the Area Controller, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, revealed that the command also seized eleven containers filled with prohibited items, including expired and unregistered pharmaceuticals, footwear, used clothing, armored cables, and frozen poultry products. The Duty Paid Value (DPV) of these seizures amounted to N424.1 million, compared to 42 seizures worth N1.4 billion during the same period in 2023.
Olomu highlighted that the command’s efforts to facilitate trade are proving effective, resulting in an easier business environment and the prevention of revenue losses. He noted that the command is enhancing cooperation with other government agencies and private sector stakeholders, including members of the host communities.
“We are vigilant against economic saboteurs, employing a non-intrusive inspection (NII) regime that uses scanners for cargo examination, supplemented by physical inspections when necessary. This collection has been achieved despite a significant reduction in trade volume,” Olomu stated.
