The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) achieved a clean sweep in the Delta Local Government election, winning all 25 local government chairmanship seats and an overwhelming majority of 499 out of 500 councillorship seats.
According to reports, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) emerged victorious in the Oshimili North Local Government Area (LGA) by winning the sole councillorship seat that was not secured by the PDP.
The results of the Delta State Local Government election were announced by Dr. Jerry Agbaike, the Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), at the commission’s headquarters in Asaba. Dr. Agbaike stated that the election did not take place in Udu Local Government Area (LGA) as the candidate for the PDP chairmanship position was declared the winner without any opposition.
The Chairman of DSIEC, Dr. Jerry Agbaike, also awarded Certificates of Return to the elected local government chairmen. Prior to this, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other prominent PDP leaders in the state had confidently foreseen success for the party’s candidates.
Following his participation in the voting process on Saturday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed optimism about the PDP’s triumph, emphasizing that the election was conducted in a transparent, free, and fair manner. He also voiced his endorsement of local government autonomy, clarifying that the Supreme Court ruling on the issue did not impact Delta State.
The governor clarified that the state government had not interfered with local government funds and had, in fact, settled outstanding debts owed by the local governments in the past.
