NULGE prepares to submit blueprint for implementation of LG financial autonomy

Date:

The National Union of Local Government Workers (NULGE) is preparing to present a comprehensive plan to the presidency and state governors.

This plan will outline a clear roadmap for the smooth implementation of the recent Supreme Court judgment, which granted financial autonomy to local governments.

The National Union of Local Government Workers (NULGE) has developed a seven-step template known as the “Operational Guidelines.”

This blueprint aims to address the fundamental challenges that have hindered effective local government administration in Nigeria. NULGE National President, Ambali Olatunji, unveiled the template during an interview on the radio program “Agbami Oselu” aired by Fresh FM in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Olatunji eased worries regarding the possibility of financial autonomy being compromised by ongoing challenges, such as the inability to pay salaries of primary school teachers.

He highlighted that local government workers face similar salary payment issues, leading to the concept of zero allocation. However, he expressed confidence that lessons have been learned from past experiences to tackle these issues effectively.

Olatunji stated, “With the advent of social media, transparency and accountability are now enhanced, making it difficult for fraud to thrive.”

“We are confident that our Operational Guidelines will provide a solid foundation for the successful implementation of financial autonomy, ensuring effective local government administration and improved service delivery to the grassroots.”
