In response to the upcoming nationwide protest set for August 1, 2024, the federal government has convened an urgent meeting.
This decision follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s plea to Nigerians to suspend the protest, stressing the requirement for additional time to implement programs focused on the welfare of the people.
According to the memo signed by Richard Pheelangwah, the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, a meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 am in the Conference Room of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Citizens are hitting the streets to express their discontent with Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, characterized by elevated inflation rates at 34.19% for core inflation and 40.87% for food inflation.
Despite the recent endorsement of a new minimum wage of N70,000 by the government, numerous citizens believe that this amount is inadequate to tackle the pervasive hardship and are advocating for more holistic remedies.
The scheduled protest is inspired by a comparable movement in Kenya, where protestors effectively influenced their government to reconsider controversial policies.
