‘A tuber of yam is now N10k; how are you all coping?’ – Caroline Danjuma queries Nigerians

Date:

Caroline Hutchins Danjuma, the ex- wife of billionaire businessman Musa Danjuma, expressed her distress regarding the current economic difficulties.

In a post on her Instagram, she shared that she went to the Sunday market yesterday and felt upset by the high prices of food items.

She said that she used to go to the market with her grandmother.

Expressing her concern, she wondered how Nigerians are managing with the expensive prices, citing examples such as a tuber of yam costing 10,000 naira, a paint bucket of potatoes costing 9,000 naira, a bag of rice costing 85,000 naira, and an avocado pear costing 1,000 to 1,500 naira.

She also stated that the trader she encountered seemed unhappy, so she didn’t feel comfortable asking for a discount.

Caroline expressed her sadness about having to buy things for her household staff, including groceries, without being concerned about the prices in the market. Nevertheless, she felt sympathy for the general public.

“I went to Sunday market yesterday, I used to go there with my grandma, nostalgic. Hmmm. How are you all coping? A tuber of yam 10k, a small paint bucket of potatoes 9k, a bag of rice 85k, avocado pear 1k/1.5k (the woman wasn’t smiling before I asked for a discount). Two pieces of Totus Fish 5k. How are you all coping? I was soooo sad I started shopping for my domestic staff inclusive. How are you all coping? I wasn’t so keen on pricing in the market; I just felt bad for the masses.
Everything is expensive. It is well with us.

Just want to take out time to check up on you all today. Maybe we need group sessions for mental and emotional therapy; I am willing to start it up with some of you…

Sending you all big hugs. The sun will soon shine on us all”.

In the same way, Nkechi expressed her frustration after spending N150k on a small amount of groceries at the Sunday market in Ogba.

She wondered what steps should be taken next, as she observed that Nigerians no longer seem to be complaining about the state of the economy.

She questioned whether people have become accustomed to the difficulties and are now comfortable with them.
