LAWMA Interns Educate Lagos Community On Proper Sanitation Practices

Date:

In an effort to enhance sanitation in Lagos State, interns from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) conducted a community awareness session in Otto Community, Lagos Mainland.

This initiative was carried out by the 34th batch of interns known as Team Eco Resilience under the LAWMA Academy. The goal was to promote proper waste management practices as part of the broader sanitation campaign in Lagos.

During the event, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, represented by Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director, emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and responsible waste disposal to the residents.

Gbadegesin highlighted that maintaining a clean environment is not solely the responsibility of LAWMA but a shared duty among all residents. He encouraged residents to use covered bins for waste disposal to prevent the spread of diseases.

Furthermore, Gbadegesin extended an invitation to the youth in Otto Community to enroll as interns at the LAWMA Academy, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in promoting a cleaner environment.

“When graduate youths from the community register as interns, they can spread awareness about what they have learned. Various opportunities now exist in waste management. To benefit, we must open our eyes to the possibilities around us.”

Saloko Babatunde, Chairman of the Otto Community Development Association and CDC Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, urged residents to participate in the community’s weekly clean-up exercise, warning of sanctions for non-compliance.

The Oloto of Otto Community, represented by Fuhad Oloto, and his chief of staff, Akeem Esuru-osho, pledged support for LAWMA and promised to adhere to environmental regulations.

Meanwhile, traders at United Amu Market took the initiative to clean their premises, inspired by the previous week’s sanitation awareness effort at Alamutu Market.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director, praised the traders for their sense of responsibility and encouraged other markets to follow their example in maintaining proper sanitation and hygiene.

“Achieving a clean and livable city of our dreams requires everyone to play their own part, we cannot afford to watch the beauty of the state erode due to indiscriminate refuse dumping and nonchalant attitude. The environment is ours to cherish and preserve. Let’s keep Lagos clean,” he said.

Last Sunday, a team of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources and LAWMA, led by LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, conducted a thorough sanitation and awareness campaign at Alamutu Market in Idi-Oro, Mushin.
