The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Benin City is enhancing its services by introducing state-of-the-art medical specialties, including surgical, obstetric, gynecologic, cardiac, and neurological care.
According to Dr. Imafidon Agbonile, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director and CEO, this expansion aims to combat the stigma surrounding mental health by combining mental healthcare with specialized treatments, providing comprehensive care to patients.
“This expansion represents a major milestone in the hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide holistic and integrated healthcare services to the general public.
The hospital also boasts a state-of-the-art molecular laboratory, radio-diagnostic facilities, 4-D ultrasound services, and immunization, among others,” the statement read.
The CMD mentioned that the introduction of these new medical services was aimed at broadening the scope of care available to patients and addressing the pervasive stigma associated with mental illness.
He highlighted, “By offering a diverse range of medical services within a single institution, the hospital fosters a more inclusive environment that normalises seeking treatment for both mental and physical health issues.
Patients can now receive comprehensive care within the same facility, reducing the need to travel to multiple locations for different health concerns. This integration ensures continuity of care, reduces patient stress, enhances overall outcomes, and encourages more individuals to seek necessary care without fear of judgment or stigma,” he stated.
Dr. Agbonile explained that the hospital’s service expansion was a deliberate strategy to increase its self-generated income, diversifying its revenue streams and enhancing financial sustainability.
“By attracting a broader patient base through the provision of high-demand specialities such as surgery, obstetrics/gynaecology, cardiology, and neurology, the hospital is positioning itself as a leading healthcare provider in Edo State.
“By integrating these vital services, we are not only addressing the immediate health needs of our patients but also promoting a more inclusive and supportive approach to mental health.”
Dr. Agbonile emphasized that the hospital’s forward-thinking approach demonstrates the harmonious integration of mental healthcare and specialized medicine.
“The hospital remains steadfast in its mission to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. The addition of surgical, obstetric/gynaecological, cardiology, and neurology services marks a new chapter in the hospital’s history, one that promises greater health outcomes and a reduction in the stigma associated with mental illness.”
