The local government election in Benue State, initially planned for July 6, 2024, has been postponed to November 16, 2024, as announced by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission.
John Chen, the Chairman of the commission, stated that the decision to change the date was due to logistical challenges. Chen mentioned that the commission required additional time to adequately prepare for the election and acquire the necessary materials, which had not been obtained yet.
He said, “We have commenced the process of rescheduling by developing a revised timetable that will accommodate all critical activities and allow sufficient time for adequate preparation.
“Today serves as the date for the issuance of the election notice in accordance with the relevant Statutes, particularly Sections 103 (3) and 150 of the Electoral Act 2022 as amended, and detailed guidelines will be released in due course in accordance with these laws.”
The Chairman made a plea to political parties, candidates, and important stakeholders to collaborate with the commission in order to facilitate a transparent and equitable election.
