Borno State Plants 10 Million Trees To Fight Desertification

Date:

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, launched a massive tree-planting initiative as part of the state’s strategy to combat desertification.

The program aims to plant 10 million diverse seedlings across the state in 2024, marking the most extensive tree-planting campaign in Nigeria’s history.

The event inaugurating this effort took place in Kawuri village in Konduga Local Government Area.

Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of not only planting trees but also implementing various measures to reduce carbon emissions in the environment.

Initiatives such as acquiring electric vehicles and distributing gas cylinders to communities in need were highlighted as part of the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Additionally, an agency dedicated to the Great Green Wall initiative was established to tackle desertification issues and preserve the ecosystem.

Recognizing the adverse effects of environmental degradation on rainfall patterns in Borno, Governor Zulum cautioned against unauthorized tree felling and directed the government officials to review existing environmental laws to address any shortcomings.

The Environment Commissioner, Engineer Emet Kiose, encouraged NGOs, clubs, associations, and the public to obtain seedlings from the ministry for tree-planting purposes.

The National Agency for the Great Green Wall commended Governor Zulum for his environmental stewardship, acknowledging his administration’s notable achievements in addressing environmental challenges.

The agency’s representatives praised Zulum’s dedication to environmental preservation during the event in Kawuri, underscoring the significance of his initiatives in promoting a greener and more sustainable future for Borno State.

“The agency is elated and happy to note that Born is the first state in the country to domesticate the GGW Act by establishing the state agency and appointing the pioneer Director General,” Abubakar acknowledged.

He added, “Thus, the NAGGW is glad to be part of the tree-planting campaign, as this not only complements the agency’s interventions, but also shows the Borno State Government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges associated with land degradation and climate change.
