CAREER
In 1982, Charly Boy launched a highlife album, which gained more popularity when his album Nwata Miss was released by Polygram Nigeria in 1985.
His most popular album, titled ‘1990’, gained its popularity due to its reference to Nigeria’s corrupt military government, which was expected to transition to civilian rule in that year (although it didn’t happen until 1999).
The song on the album sparked controversy, leading to some radio stations refusing to play it.
However, despite the controversy, it became one of the best-selling albums of the year.
In recent years, Charles has collaborated with his cousin, Dr. Alban, on several popular songs such as ‘Carolina’ and ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’.

In the late 1980s, Charly Boy, with the help of stylist and fellow singer/songwriter Tyna Onwudiwe, created a new image for himself.
This new persona included attire from the punk era, such as leather jackets and boots, as well as images of himself on powerbikes.
He also sported a mohawk, which he would dye in various colors. Additionally, he took a new direction in music by combining African pop and Afrobeat.
He quickly gained the unofficial nickname His Royal Punkness and subsequently had to change the name of his residence in Lagos to The Punk Palace.
In the late 1990s, Charly Boy started sporting dreadlocks and embraced a gothic appearance, getting piercings and tattoos.
These modifications were disapproved by society, who saw them as Satanic and occult.
However, he decided to shave off his dreadlocks in 2014.
