In an effort to promote a clean, safe, and sustainable environment throughout the state, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is anticipated to announce the initiation of a monthly sanitation exercise.
On Sunday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, indicated that the governor would soon make this announcement.
A statement from the ministry’s spokesperson, Kunle Adeshina, highlighted that the state government is underscoring the significance of proper sanitation practices among all residents to maintain a clean, flood-free, safe, and sustainable environment.
Wahab emphasized this point during the weekly community-focused environmental sanitation awareness campaign held at Omobokun Street, near Ekimogun Underbridge, in the Bariga Local Council Development Area.
“What we are trying to do is to ramp up sensitisation and advocacy before the formal commencement of the monthly environmental sanitation, which will soon be announced by the governor,” the commissioner said.
He also noted that investigations into several properties revealed that some had improperly connected their septic systems to drainage channels or had constructed buildings over them.
Wahab mentioned that such properties would be sealed by the state government.
Addressing the flooding issues in the area, Wahab stated that the government would investigate claims made by residents who believe that the sand filling conducted at the Oworo area is causing flooding in Ekimogun, assuring that a sustainable solution would be sought.
Kolade Alabi, the Chairman of Bariga LCDA, expressed disappointment over the condition of Ekimogun Road, which Governor Sanwo-Olu had previously inaugurated, attributing its deterioration to residents’ unsanitary practices.
“We the residents of Bariga must, therefore, stop littering our roads and canals with waste. We must bag our waste in our respective homes and always patronise the PSP operators,” he stated.
