On September 5th, a Lagos Chief Magistrate Court ordered the remand of Ganiyu Oyedepo, also known as Koko Zaria, a senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in prison custody for allegedly assaulting actor Baba Lawori.
In July, actor Baba Lawori sought help from Nigerians after being brutally attacked by an aide of Koko Zaria, a senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Baba Lawori recounted being approached by a stranger while working as an MC at an event, claiming Koko Zaria wanted to see him, which led to a confrontation and an associate of Koko Zaria smashing a bottle on his head, causing injury and loss of consciousness.
The Nigeria police investigated the assault and charged Koko Zaria, who pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him by the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID).
Prosecutor Morufu Animashaun stated that Koko Zaria conspired with his associates to assault Baba Lawori on June 5, 2024, at Idimu, resulting in a head injury.
Koko Zaria’s lawyers, S. Bello and S.O Ajetomobi, applied for bail, arguing that the charge is bailable, and the court granted bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties must have an unquestionable character, evidence of means of livelihood, and reside within the court’s jurisdiction, with requirements to present evidence of three years’ tax and have their addresses verified.
The Chief Magistrate ordered Koko Zaria to be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) custody until the bail terms are perfected.
