A teacher in Landmark International School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, by the name Faith Nwoye who flogged a nine-year-old pupil to death, has been arrested and sentenced to 21 years imprisonment.
A nine-year-old boy, was said to have died from the injuries he sustained from the beating.
Faith was convicted by a special court handling women and children-related matters in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The Incident occurred when Faith excessively flogged the pupil, whose name was disclosed as Henry Okonkwo, leading to severe injuries.
Henry was quickly rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Awka, where he unfortunately fell into a coma.
Nwoye was charged with manslaughter and subsequently found guilty by the special court after a thorough investigation.
The 21-year sentence is expected to serve as a deterrent to similar incidents in the future.
Okonkwo has, however, been laid to rest in his hometown, Igbakwu, in Ayamelum Local Government Area
This case drew concerns over child abuse and the need for stringent regulations in educational institutions.
At the burial, Anambra Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the Anambra Commissioner for represented by the Director of Schools in the Ministry of Education, Ifeoma Onyeneke, conveyed deep condolences to the Okonkwo family.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh stressed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is committed to eradicating illegal schools in Anambra State.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s dedication to protecting the welfare and safety of all students in the state
She urged parents and guardians to ensure their children are enrolled in accredited institutions to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
