Cross River State Praises Media For Cholera Awareness

During a media workshop in Calabar, the Cross River State Ministry of Health showcased significant progress in reducing cholera cases between 2022 and 2024.

The workshop, organized by Nigeria Health Watch alongside the state Ministry of Health, aimed to discuss Nigeria’s current cholera situation and assess the state’s efforts in cholera management, highlighting the crucial role of the media in public health reporting.

The workshop included a question-and-answer session and pre- and post-training assessments to evaluate the program’s effectiveness.

Dr. Egbe Ayuk, the Cross River State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the media’s pivotal role in combating the cholera outbreak during the event.

He stressed the importance of collaboration between the Health Ministry and the media for an effective response to cholera.

He said, “The media’s involvement is essential in our efforts to combat cholera.” Their role in disseminating accurate information can significantly impact public awareness and response.”

Abara Erim, the Program Manager of Nigeria Health Watch, discussed the media’s role in cholera outbreak response, emphasizing the need for vigilance in preventing misinformation and maintaining accurate reporting.

Dr. Blessing Ekpenyong, the Cross River State Epidemiologist, highlighted the state’s improvements in its cholera response from 2022 to 2024.

She attributed part of the success to collaboration with the media and other partners, demonstrating the state’s commitment to addressing cholera effectively.

Mrs. Catherine Ukpepi, the State Health Promotion Officer, commended the media for disseminating preventive measures against cholera and urged journalists to continue accurate reporting on critical cases.

Mrs. Attai Bassey, the Assistant Health Promotion Officer at Cross River State Ministry of Health, presented the July 2024 Cross River Community Polling Result for Cholera, applauding the state’s proactive measures in combating the disease.

Despite the high burden in other states, she noted a significant reduction in confirmed cases and deaths in Cross River State from 2022 to 2024.
